Fossil Creek: AZ’s hidden gem

I think we can all agree that Arizona is pretty f***ing awesome. From being the home of one of the world’s 7 wonders, The Grand Canyon, to being a top winter destination for snowbirds, we really have so much to offer in our little desert. If you live here then you know that Arizona is paradise for wanderlusters and outdoor enthusiasts. As a native I feel like I haven’t been doing my part my exploring my own backyard. This all is changing as I’ve been looking for new hikes and places to see this year.

One of my new favorite local spots is Fossil Creek. Just two hours by car, and approximately 4 miles of hiking, you could be jumping off waterfalls and cave diving through emerald pools. I recommend Fossil Creek to anyone looking for an adventure or just needing a solid workout. It’s an easy day trip and offers different hikes depending how far you would like to go.

For this hike, I think the most important thing to note is the new permit passes that need to be acquired online before getting to the trailhead. The permits are only $10.00 per vehicle and completely worth it (you can purchase permits here). The trick is to purchase a month ahead of time to ensure you get the day you wanted and the parking spot. The permits go on sale 10:00a.m. ET. Also, don’t forget to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks and I personally recommend water shoes.

I went with a car filled with some of my absolute favorite humans and couldn’t have had a better time. Can’t wait for you to check out this hike. Be warned though, the water at falls is chilly, but with the uphill hike out you will surely heat up real quick.

Have fun fellow adventurers!
